Project Description

For this research project, I have decided to write it on the Effects of Not Having Social Media. I could also title this project Pros and Cons of Social Media. I am not exactly sure of the title as of yet. Once I begin to do some research, the title should form itself. When my parents were growing up, they obviously did not have social media so that is how I was raised. Social media really started to take off when I was in high school. All of my friends had Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook along with numerous other socials. I created a Facebook account senior year for a school program, but I do not use it often. Since I never really jumped on this social media bandwagon, I thought it would be interesting to contrast it with those growing up in this social media age we are heavily dependent on today.

Now that we are living in a digital society, it is important for us to understand if we even have control over our own privacy and confidentiality. New media has definitely revolutionized the way that we look at our privacy. It is completely different from even how we evaluated privacy 10 years ago. The fourth amendment to the Constitution protects the privacy of ourselves, our homes and our belongings. I feel like since we are living in a digital society, everything already exists out there or has been created somehow. So, thinking about a new media type that does not already exist is a bit difficult.  Living in our current political climate, I think that it is a necessity to know if what we are reading and listening to is completely factual or not. This type of new media I am suggesting would be able to fact check for you, so you are obtaining reliable and correct information. Let’s say the speaker is giving statistics about whatever they are talking about. The application would tell you if the numbers are correct and if his or her speech sounds similar to someone else’s speech. I also think that it would be really cool for this application to tell you who is speaking, if you do not already know, and tell you where the contents of whatever they are speaking or writing about is from. I believe that Baruch College currently does a pretty good job with keeping up to date with all the changes in new media. They utilize various social media sites to share and inform their students, alumni and future students. Their website is also updated. If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the college, I would make a few suggestions. First, the relationships between students and professors can be more interactive and engaging. Many professors that I have had just use PowerPoint slides to teach and are only available outside of class for maybe 2 office hours. That is not sufficient time, especially if you are not grasping a topic or there are many students there in the same position as you. An interactive portal or blog would be really great. The professor and students can easily post questions, problems and solve any issues more efficiently. You are also constantly learning all day with a site similar to this one. Textbooks could also be digitalized
