Wiki So Far

So far for our Baruch wiki I have been playing around with the website and just getting an idea of what information I want to add. I have been clicking on random pages are just reading through them. I have made spelling and grammatical edits on business page, sports page, and the fashion page. I also added an image on the YouTube page.

I am planning on adding a few more sections for certain topics. I want to make the Fashion section a Beauty and Fashion section. Social media has affected the beauty industry in so many ways. I will add content about apps that you can download and basically try on makeup to see how it will look on a picture of you. Many makeup companies are completely online now, which adds to the way that this industry operates. I might also include feuds within the beauty industry that have begun on YouTube and some other social sites. Also, when I was on the Health and Fitness page, at the few bottom had a small section on social media’s impact on mental health and wellness. I definitely think that this section needs to be much bigger because it has an enormous impact on society. Since this was the topic of my term paper, I am planning on adding sections on cyberbullying and mental health.

    Fashion and Beauty seems like a super creative topic that I would love to learn more about. Seeing how so many young individuals are constantly using social media to learn more about cosmetic products really makes me wonder how it all works. Do you need a successful celebrity or endorser? Or can influencers work as well on social media?

    I have to say that beauty and fashion have been heavily influenced by social media in the past 3 years which is evident on Instagram and Youtube. Also, I completely agree with you that many people tend to ignore mental health. I am glad people like yourself and I are adding on to the conversation so it is not a social stigma.. It is about time that people start to address this important matter!

For this research project, I have decided to write it on the Effects of Not Having Social Media. I could also title this project Pros and Cons of Social Media. I am not exactly sure of the title as of yet. Once I begin to do some research, the title should form itself. When my parents were growing up, they obviously did not have social media so that is how I was raised. Social media really started to take off when I was in high school. All of my friends had Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook along with numerous other socials. I created a Facebook account senior year for a school program, but I do not use it often. Since I never really jumped on this social media bandwagon, I thought it would be interesting to contrast it with those growing up in this social media age we are heavily dependent on today.

Now that we are living in a digital society, it is important for us to understand if we even have control over our own privacy and confidentiality. New media has definitely revolutionized the way that we look at our privacy. It is completely different from even how we evaluated privacy 10 years ago. The fourth amendment to the Constitution protects the privacy of ourselves, our homes and our belongings. The internet was not around when this document was written, so are we protected on the internet?  “We are fast approaching a privacy crisis in the United States. Google, Facebook and other big Internet companies collect information about us, which they deploy in the service of advertisers” (Nocera). Big companies are taking our information from these new media sites and selling them to other companies to make more money and just increase the flow of information. I feel like since we are living in a digital society, everything already exists out there or has been created somehow. So, thinking about a new media type that does not already exist is a bit difficult.  Living in our current political climate, I think that it is a necessity to know if what we are reading and listening to is completely factual or not. This type of new media I am suggesting would be able to fact check for you, so you are obtaining reliable and correct information. Let’s say the speaker is giving statistics about whatever they are talking about. The application would tell you if the numbers are correct and if his or her speech sounds similar to someone else’s speech. I also think that it would be really cool for this application to tell you who is speaking, if you do not already know, and tell you where the contents of whatever they are speaking or writing about is from.
