P2P

Since we are living in a digital society, everything can be done and shared on there. File sharing is the practice of sharing or offering access to digital information or resources, such as documents, videos, graphics, computer programs, images and e-books. File sharing can be done privately or publicly. With file sharing, numerous users can have and edit the same document at the same time with no issue. File sharing implies a system in which users write to or read files to users with a certain level of access.

Peer to peer (P2P) file sharing is the most common form of file sharing. Even though this is the most used form, it is also the most controversial method of file sharing. P2P file sharing allows users to directly access, download and edit files. The use of the P2P software is done through third party software. This method has revolutionized the way that we use the internet. The P2P file sharing is mostly associated with spreading pirated content. It should be used for good because it eases up the process of mass distribution of digital content over the internet. In Brian Stelter and Brad Stone’s NYTimes article, “Digital Pirates Winning Battle with Studios”, they discuss the impact pirated movies have on the movie studios. “On the day last July when “The Dark Knight” arrived in theaters, Warner Brothers was ready with an ambitious antipiracy campaign that involved months of planning and steps to monitor each physical copy of the film”. Even though Warner Brothers were preparing and monitoring the movie, they could not completely control the access and spread of it online. Millions of people rather watch a movie in okay quality online then to go and pay to watch it in theaters. You can watch a pirated movie on YouTube or freestreammovies.com. P2P file sharing software also includes Gnutella, Lime Wire and BearShare. There are so many sites and software to use.

P2P file sharing is not only a bad thing. Using it for downloading and uploading pirated content may be illegal. Users should try to make good use of this tool in a positive light to get the most out of it (Tiwari).

  1. Hi Allysia,
Your views on file sharing were really interesting to me, it opened up my mind to a few new things on P2P that I did not know before. I agree with the point that although you are able to get a lot of files by sharing them across a network, it is not always safe because it is illegal and downloading pirate content can be dangerous for your hardware.
